Write a cover letter with AI

A tailored cover letter could help your application stand out. These steps show how you could use a free AI app to draft one from the job ad and your own experience, then make it sound like you.

Four steps, about ten minutes

  1. Copy the job ad text, especially the duties and “about you” parts.
  2. Write 4–6 dot points about your real experience, tickets, licences and wins.
  3. Paste both into the prompt below.
  4. Edit the draft so it sounds like you, check every claim is true, then send it yourself.

A prompt you could copy

Help me write a cover letter.
Job ad: [paste]
My experience (true facts only): [dot points]
Write a one-page letter in plain Australian English that matches my experience to the top 3 needs in the ad. Keep it under 300 words. Do not add skills or qualifications I did not list. Then give me 3 questions I could prepare for the interview.

Check before you send. Make sure every skill, date and qualification is true. Employers may check. AI can get facts, dates and names wrong. You decide what goes out.

Questions

Will employers know I used AI?

Some might. Editing the draft into your own words and adding real examples usually makes it read as yours.

Which AI app should I use?

Any free chat app such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot could work. The steps are the same.
